Preventing migration of unemployed Jammu youth
'Insensitive, biased BJP'

Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 28: The unemployment problem in Jammu region has assumed alarming proportions. The unemployment rate in Jammu region, according to official statistics, is over 69 per cent. In Kashmir, it is less than 30 per cent. There are approximately 4.5 lakh employees in the government and semi-government establishments. The share of Jammu region is not even 25 per cent. The number of employees from Jammu region is about one lakh. As for Kashmir, the number of employees from this all powerful, privileged and over-pampered Valley is nearly 3.5 lakh. Similarly, employees from Jammu region as well as Ladakh are conspicuous by their absence in the Civil Secretariat, the seat of power. It has been swamped by persons from Kashmir. The story of representation of the Jammu youth in the technical and professional institutions, located in Jammu itself, is no different.
All this should clinch the whole issue and establish that the Jammu region has been deprived of its legitimate due share in the vital service sector. The fact of the matter is that the highly qualified Jammu youth have got only crumbs. The result has been that many Jammu youth have migrated to other parts of the country in search of jobs. The process of migration continues unabated even today for obvious reasons. Their migration has only added to the woes of their parents, as the latter have no one to look after them. Just pay a visit to the posh localities like Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Chhani Himmat, Roop Nagar, to mention only a few, and you will see for yourself the condition in which many parents have been living. The life of many parents has become a veritable hell on earth.
It was hoped that the participation of the BJP in the coalition Government would ease the problem by creating employment opportunities for the unemployed youth, but it did nothing whatsoever in this regard. The hope had stemmed from its assertions during the election campaign that it would mitigate the hardships of the unemployed Jammu youth and the result was that the people of Jammu region, including the frustrated and desperate-for-jobs Jammu youth, swung solidly behind the BJP. The BJP won 25+ seats and became part of the coalition Government almost six months ago. But there is nothing on the horizon which could even remotely suggest that the BJP took any step to ease the unemployment problem in Jammu region. Contrarily, there is everything in public domain which suggests that the role of the BJP had been worse as compared with the role of the Congress, which the people of Jammu region decimated for its anti-Jammu and pro-Kashmir attitude. It has become B-team of the Kashmiri party or representative of the valley people. The people of Jammu region are accusing the BJP of being "insensitive and biased".
The immediate fall-out of the negative role being played by the BJP is acceleration of the process of migration from Jammu region. Their migration has to be stopped for the larger national interest. But how it could be done? Who will do it? The Valley-centric BJP will not do it. It has already merged its identity with the Kashmiri parties for power. Only a regional party with a national outlook could do it. The Panthers Party is there. But the question is: Will the Panthers Party, which right now has no representation in the Assembly, stick to its August 22 Jammu resolve and work relentlessly for obtaining the status of statehood for Jammu region? It must. It can fill the vacuum in the region if it so likes. One thing is very clear: The lasting solution to the Jammu problem is the reorganization of the State on a regional basis. Reorganization will not only empower the people of Jammu region but it would also check the process of migration of Jammu youth to other parts of the country.
