Srinagar, Feb 17: Sun was playing hide and seek much to the delight of the people, despite prediction of wet weather, though ice cold winds continued in Kashmir, where night temperature further improved and settled several degree above normal.
A Met department spokesperson told that rain and snow would occur at few places in the state during the next 24 hours, followed by moderate to heavy snowfall at most places during the subsequent 48 hours.
Even though there was further improvement in night temperature at the border town of Kargil, it was still the coldest place in the region at minus 4.8 degree, against minus 7.5 degree recorded yesterday.
The mercury at Leh, which received 2.9 mm of rain during the last 24 hours, surged five degree from yesterday and settled at minus 0.4 degree.
He said there is a possibility of light snow during the next 24 hours in Leh, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will remain around 3 degree and minus 4 degrees, respectively.
There was some improvement in night temperature at the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which is under over 10 feet of snow, though it still was the coldest place in the valley. Against minus 3.6 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 1 degree, which is about five notches above normal.
After witnessing further improvement in night temperature, sun greeted people in this summer capital, giving some relief to the people after week-long chilly conditions due to cloudy skies. The mercury during the night further surged and settled at 5.1 degree, against 3.5 degree recorded yesterday. The temperature at Srinagar, which received 0.2 mm of overnight rain, was five degree above normal.
He said snow or rain would occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be 7 degrees and 3 degrees, respectively.
However, there was some dip in the night temperature at the world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, though it was still 6 degree above normal. Against 1.8 degrees recorded yesterday, the night temperature was 0.7 degrees.
Night temperature at Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir Valley, on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, also surged one degree from yesterday and settled at 2.6 degree. The temperature was about three degrees above normal.
Another health resort Kokernag and Kupwara in north Kashmir also witnessed some improvement in the night temperature. Against 1.5 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature at Kokernag was 3.8 degree while mercury surged and settled at 2.5 degree at Kupwara, against 1.1 degree witnessed yesterday.
