Early Times Report

Rajouri, Mar 20: At a time when the central government claims to be committed to weed out corruption, the Power Development Department (PDD) here is allegedly seeking Chai Paani for installation of new connections while the poor customers are being fleeced.
The villagers of Nahoti area of Sunderbani tehsil said they were being forced to pay Rs 1000 as "chai paani fee" for the ground staff for installation of new connections. Rajendra Kumar son of late Shri Krishen Kumar said the PDD staff charged him Rs 1000 as "installation fee" for which no invoice was given by the department. He said when he approached the concerned officials of PDD including Junior Engineer and the Assistant Executive Engineer, they felt offended and have started settling personal scores by sending inflated power bills.
"For the first month I was served bill of Rs one thousand and the next month the bill was again inflated to Rs 1500. This is injustice," the complainant said.
The villagers said it has become a routine in the area that PDD engineers have been crossing all limits of corruption. "Why do we need to grease the palms of the PDD employees," the villagers said. The PDD officials said the matter would be looked into. Meanwhile the Sunderbani locals have sought personal intervention of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh who is also the Power Minister to look into the matter.
