Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 20 : It is not yet known what made Srinagar Airport authorities to call last year that Srinagar Airport has been rated as the 2nd best airport in the world. The poor facilities in place raises serious questions over claims of airport authorities.
Director Srinagar Airport claimed last year in March that Srinagar Airport has been rated as the 2nd best airport in the world in the category of handling up to 2 million passengers per year by the Airports Council International.
"Our rating is 4.77 out of 5, which is the 2nd best in providing good services to our valued customers," the Director had said.
The Director had said the feat was achieved with the coordination, cooperation, excellent efforts and sincerity by all the colleagues, section in-charges and security personnel working at the airport. But people have been mocking his claims with many terming Srinagar Airport one among the "poorest service provider" in the world. One has to reach to the Airport by going through several check points thus bringing much inconveniences to the travelers. "We have stinky and leaked bathrooms here. Even birds like sparrows are found inside the building," an official of Srinagar Airport said. "The Airport's lighting system is below 1.3 km visibility."Mohammad Sharif, a travel agent said he was shocked last year when he heard that Srinagar Airport is 2nd best airport in the world. "It may be second worst airport in the world. There are no facilities available with stinky washrooms. I even told airport authorities many times that there are no facilities available for the travelers," he said.
He said although Srinagar Airport has been designated as international airport but it laeks the facilities which should have been available at the international airport. "There are very poor facilities available with no night flying operations. There is immense crowd and noise and facilities are not upto the mark of international airport," he said.
Shahid, a hotelier said the facilities of Srinagar Airport are not upto the standard of airports in India. "We can't compare it with Indian airports and not talk about the world airports," John said.
"There is no quick service available. During winters when there is some poor visibility, flights don't take off or land at the airport then how can one call it 2nd best airport in the world," he added.
The High Court has also directed the authorities to take immediate steps to mitigate the sufferings of the passengers.
