Jammu, Apr 21: The recent statement of MP Jammu-Poonch constituency over the four lanning of 28 kms Jammu-Akhnoor road has indicated how politicians empty recur over projects of huge public importance for years, without delivering.
When the incumbent MP was BJP MLA from Nagrota constituency during NC-Congress coalition government, he had confronted then Minister for planning, Ajay Sadhotra in the State Legislative Assembly over the issue of broadening and four-lanning of Akhnoor road and subsequently accused the ruling dispensation of discrimination with road projects of Jammu. Close to five years since then, three years since BJP government came to power at the center and little less than three years since BJP-PDP coalition government assumed power in the state, the critical project is still in government files only.
According to reports, 705 road accident cases were registered under five police stations which have jurisdiction on this 28 kilometers stretch including Police station Nowabad, PS Domana, PS Kanachak, PS Gharota and PS Akhnoor, as a result of which 90 persons were killed and 1008 others got injured in them during the last two years, but despite alarming fatalities, the project that has still not seen light of the day and politicians have been harping on it for years.
In the last session of the state legislature, Minister for R&B and Parliamentary Affairs Abdul Rehman Veeri had informed the house that Jammu-Akhnoor road had been entrusted to National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) for its up-gradation to four-lane with paved shoulders. He also informed that the construction of 4-lane Jammu-Akhnoor and Akhnoor-Poonch roads are already in Prime Minister's Special Package and the process of land acquisition and other prerequisite paper work is in progress. He said the process is time-consuming and tenders will be floated soon after the land acquisition is completed.
The Minister's reply amply indicated that the project would still take time to take off and in the meanwhile, growing volume of vehicular traffic on this road, coupled with encroachments at various places is making it highly dicey. "The city has grown in this direction at a fast pace and many educational institutions, banquets, commercial outlets and residential colonies have come on this road, besides, it continues to remain critical as it links twin boarder districts of Poonch and Rajouri to Jammu. Government needs to understand the urgent need to take up the project and complete it expeditiously" said residents of Dream city residential locality near Muthi.
