Early Times Report

Jammu, May 19: Impediments have been removed from the way of just selection of 75 outstanding sportspersons in Government jobs under SRO 349 after Government realized its mistake and is in the process of making necessary addendum in the notification issued earlier this month.
Sources informed that SRO 349 provides for the absorption of 25 outstanding sportspersons in Government service every year, for which applications are invited from the meritorious sportspersons and a selection committee headed by the Chief Secretary short lists 25 applicants on the basis of their sports achievements. However, notification under the said SRO was not issued since 2014, and the aspirants were informed that the selection committee had received representations for making certain amendments in the SRO and hence the notification would be issued only after they were considered and incorporated. However, three years since then, no amendments were made in the SRO and the notification was issued by the J&K State Sports Council following directions of the GAD in May this year.
The notification issued by the J&KSSC rendered many deserving candidates ineligible as the notification failed to address the backlog created by the failure of the Government to notify the posts during last three years.
"As per the provisions of the SRO, the sportspersons who have earned their achievement certificates five years prior to the publication of the notification were eligible to apply, but since these were backlog posts, the same period of qualification needed to be extended to the candidates who earned their achievement certificates earlier" explained an international player.
ET learnt that after the anomaly was brought to the notice of the authorities in J&K SSC, GAD and Ministry of Youth Services and Sports, consensus evolved over the said discrepancy and it was agreed that modified notification required to be published inorder to extend legitimate opportunity to those outstanding sportspersons who could not apply due to failure of the government to advertise posts under the SRO during last three years. "We represented our case at the relevant forums and thankfully, our submission was accepted" said a parent whose son was a national medalist. "The Minister for youth Services and Sports has given his consent and we are expecting an amended notification soon, which shall pave way for all those genuine sportspersons who were left out due to the notification issued earlier" he added.
