HC seeks report about sewage management in Sonamarg

Srinagar, Sept 19: The state High Court today sought a report by September 27 about the management of sewage as well as quality of the water in the ecologically fragile tourist resort of Sonamarg.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a division bench of the court comprising Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed and Justice Ali Mohammad also directed Chief Executive Officer Sonamarg Development Authority to submit report about general sewage treatment in the Sonamarg.
The division bench also directed the concerned authorities to ensure proper management of solid waste and other non-biodegradable waste in and around the resort.
On one of the previous hearings, the court had pulled up then CEO of Sonamarg Development Authority for large scale constructions in the tourist resort.
"If you allow constructions, everything is gone then. You people are going to ruin the nature's beauty. Whole area of Sonamarg is being commercialized. Save it from further destruction" the court had observed.
Earlier, the High Court banned till further orders all constructions in Sonamarg area of central Kashmir's Ganderbal district.
"We have noticed that constructions are taking place in Sonmarg. We direct that no construction shall be carried till further orders," the division bench had said.
