Jammu, Dec 10: With the plunging mercury, the wait for sleeper class passengers at Kathua Railway Station for often late arrival of trains, becomes tougher in absence of waiting room facility at the station. The Station Master is often compelled by the passengers to open the only Upper-class waiting room for sleeper class passengers.
The Kathua Railway station caters to a large area including several hilly tehsils of the district, industrial area, Kathua city population, paramilitary, army units stationed in the district. Given the moderate number of passengers, most of the trains including superfast have a halt at the station to board and de-board the passengers.
Majority of the passengers, who take trains from the railway station are usually sleeper class passengers but there is no waiting room facility for them. The one room waiting facility is for upper class, whose number is usually very less from the Kathua railway station.
Usually the Station Master is requested by passengers to open the waiting room and he almost obliged their requests, a vendor working at Railway station said, adding that the passengers have an impression that the waiting room is for all reserved category passengers.
"On Sunday, this confusion led to a minor verbal dual between passengers and an employee of railway department. When the passengers asked the employee to open the waiting room, he in turn asked for the ticket. When the passengers informed him about sleeper class ticket, he replied that the room will not be opened", an eyewitness said, adding that the verbal dual turned little hot and the passenger once again approached Station Master, who asked the employee to open the waiting room.
"The Station Master, the Railway employee as well as passengers were right at their part. The waiting room is not for sleeper class passengers so the railway employee denied, whereas the passengers had no fault of their, because they were of the impression that it is for sleeper class", eyewitness said, adding that though it was a minor issue but the moot question was the availability of waiting room facility for sleeper class passengers.
When most of the trains have halt at Kathua Railway station, a waiting room must be there for sleeper class, in absence of which the passengers have to wait at station in chilling winters as well as during peak summers.
