Reopening of cinema halls in Kashmir: NC spokesman supports Mehbooba
12/13/2017 11:23:56 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 13: In a dramatic development, Junaid Mattoo, the spokesman of the opposition National Conference has endorsed the proposal of the Peoples Democratic Party led government on the reopening of cinema halls in restive Kashmir.
While the PDP has long been in favor of reopening of cinema halls in the valley, the National Conference has seconded the plans.
The development came to fore when Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti tweeted to hail opening of cinema halls in the Saudi Arabia. "I welcome the decision by Saudi Arabia to lift a decade-long ban on cinemas as part of a series of social reforms by the crown prince. Introspection & self reform are marks of a progressive society," Mehbooba Mufti tweeted.
The NC spokesman not only retweeted her words but said he agrees to it. "Agree. Time to reopen cinemas in Kashmir too. It's an apolitical issue and shouldn't be delayed anymore. Have to give our people the semblance of a normal, social life along with peace and stability. Reopening cinemas doesn't negate the conflict or the need to resolve it," Junaid posted on the micro-blogging website.
Interestingly though Mehbooba had not made any reference to reopening of cinema halls in Kashmir Junaid understood what was "written between the lines."
On November 1, batting for re-opening of cinema halls in Kashmir, minister and government spokesman Naeem Akhtar had called for public support.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the second edition of Kashmir World Film Festival (KWFF) where more than 30 international, national and regional films will be screened.
"We have denied our young generation cinema (halls). The whole world has cinemas, even Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia is also opening them now. I do not know why people do not think about opening cinemas here," Akhtar said.
He said every house has cinemas as television beams movies and so can mobile phones.
The minister said the government would provide protection to cinema halls, but the society has to be ready for it. It's for the first time in the recent past that NC has openly seconded any proposal made by the ruling PDP.
Many cinema halls closed in the Valley after militancy surfaced there in the 1990s and have remained so since then.
