Anganwari centres running without basic amenities
18881 AWCs have no toilets, 17676 lack drinking water facilities

Jammu, May 20: The coalition government has failed to provide basic amenities in Anganwari centres across state as nearly 18881 are running without toilets while 17676 centres having no drinking water facilities. Besides more than 50 percent centres run from rented buildings.
Sources informed Early Times that under the central sponsored scheme of Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), the Ministry of Women and Child Development had sanctioned 31938 anganwari centres wherein 29,599 are operational and nearly 2339 centres are yet to be made functional across the state.
"Owing to non availability of toilets inside the centres, the children enrolled in these centres are seen attending nature's call in open", said sources.
Sources further said that out of these anganwari centres, only one thousand are running from the government buildings and remaining ones are operating from the rented building that too from Kutcha building. "In contrast to neighbouring states likes Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, the state of Jammu and Kashmir has come at lower pedestal in term of providing drinking water and toilets facilities to anganwari centres", said sources.
In Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, only 2234 and 5233 centres having no toilets facilities whereas 2493 and 658 centres respectively having no drinking water facilities.
"Out of these sanctioned AWCs, the government of Jammu and Kashmir especially the Social Welfare department has succeeded to maintain the data of only 28,636 Centres while the remaining ones having no records maintained so far by the department", reveals sources.
It is pertinent to mention here that in financial year 2016-17 and 2017-18, the Union government sanctioned worth of Rs 26,732.11 and Rs 17185.27 Lakhs respectively for development and nutrition diet of these centres including state share but the state government has succeeded to utilize only half of sanctioned amount so far.
