Jhelum floods, a curse to Kashmiris
7/11/2018 11:08:45 PM
Sahil Malik

It is a well known fact that we can
fight only with those dangers which we can see but what about those curses of our lives which can come in the most silent hours of night and perish the very existence of living life from that stretch of land, yes i am talking about the most dreadful flood of river jhelum which can come any time and can engulf the Kashmiri world with in no time. It is very unfortunate on the part of Jammu and Kashmir Government that even after witnessing the brutal face of flood of river jhelum in 2014, during which flood of river jhelum appeared as biggest furry of nature and horrified not only the people of Srinagar city but people of whole world and engulfed 227 prized lives and property worth crore of rupees Govt. has not taken any firm step for eradication of threats of flood of jhelum. Irony to Kashmiri people fate is, Govt. Inspite of knowing that jhelum can knock out Kashmiri homes any time, it has not come up with solutions which can lesson the terror of flood of jhelum from the already wounded hearts of Kashmir . In a tweet made by former CM Omar Abdullah, he raised questions over the PDP-BJP government's measures to avoid a situation like flood in the state. "What was the PDP-BJP government doing after the devastating floods of 2014? What happened to the dredging of the Jehlum? Why was the carrying capacity of the flood channel not increased? Where did the money go," River Jhelum has been in world wide debate because of the mayhem and dread it is creating in the form of feral floods in the Valley for past few years. The History speaks that all the big civilisations of world have established their selves along the sides of big rivers but floods of Jhelum have created a terror in the hearts of people of Valley in particular and people of world in general. No body can even dare to imagine that horrified face of Jhelum during the month of September 4 years back. Jhelum had appeared in the form of a big horrified ghost and engulfed about 227 precious lives of Valley and also destroyed the property of worth Rs 5,700 crore. Flood of Jhelum has destroyed every sector like agriculture, horticulture, roads, railways, bridges, power and communication etc. Over flowing of river Jhelum still exists as an unending threat over the lives and property of people of Valley. Following are two main reasons of rising of water level of Jhelum. Encroachment- Srinagar, being a most eminent tourist spot, always attracts big business men to launch their business here in the form of shops and big restaurants. This unending money lust forces them to criminally occupy the areas adjoining the river. With this, they have reduce the width of river to almost zero. That confined place is not sufficient to adjust extra water during heavy rain fall, thus water finds its way in human dwellings.
Natural Imbalance
Pollution across the earth have caused global warming, this global warming has brought a great fluctuation in seasons. Unseasoned rain falls and cloud burst are the out come of these changes.
history speaks that when and where any natural mishap over shadowed the human dwelling, at that time every one stepped in to tackle with problem. So following are some of the suggestions for every native of J and K to be taken in order to obliterate the intimidation of flood exclusively.
*Construction of a embankment.
As we all know that over flowing of a river can be restricted only by the construction of a burly embankment along the sides of river. To be very practical, it is out of the ambit of our State government to construct brawny embankment along whole length, means a wall of 725 kms on both sides of river so, the liability of erection of embankment also lies on the shoulders of natives of State.
Every State Subject should donate as much money for this gigantic project of construction, because when there is unprecedented danger over the lives and possessions then we should voluntarily come out to contribute. As money and assets without life has no connotation, so please unite hands, to resolve this up coming peril, which can come at any time and again perishes every thing.
*The succeeding step towards the control of flooded water is the out let of as much canals as the Govt. can from the river Jhelum because in the time of flood, these canals can allocate the water in diverse directions thus debarring the water to enter into human abode.
*In addition to already existing dams of hydro powers governments on war footing should make strategy for the erection of more dams, so that we could utilise the water for hydro power.
*Illegal intrusions must be removed as soon as possible, and then government should accomplish a survey for erection of embankment after leaving an adequate gap for river.
In the end, I would like to say that for natural catastrophe we can only implore to God, but for edifice of embankment, canals and dams, our input of money would give momentum to this progression. More over we can have faith on our present Governor Shri N N Vora that he will definitely make a way through so that we can sleep with out the fear of being knocked out by the water of river of jhelum.
