Early Times Report

KUPWARA, Aug 16: The residents of two far flung areas including Karnah and Tanghdar on Thursday held a sit-in protest in north Kashmir's Tanghdar area over the disposal of debris.
Local residents of Tanghdar said that hundreds of people assembled at main chowk Tanghdar today shouting slogans against the government for not disposing the debris that was caused by cloud burst.
"From past two days, we had been demanding the officials concerned to dispose of the debris to sanitize the area against outbreak of diseases", said Aijaz Ahmad. The local resident of Tangdar said that some officials have dumped the debris in Nallah, where as we told the authorities that debris should be disposed off at some other places outside the market, to rule out outbreak of diseases in the area. Earlier, multiple cloudbursts struck at Shamsbari Mountain amid the heavy rains in the region which triggered flash floods in several villages of Tanghdar. The affected villages include Nachayian, Hajinad, Bagh Baila, Gumul, and Tanghdar.
Sources told Early Times that during the flash floods, scores of shops, two army oil tanker vehicles along with oil barrels were washed away. A behak (makeshift house for summers) near the Shamsbari Mountain was also washed away.
They said that in a tragic incident, houses and agricultural land were damaged due to flood in the area. It is learnt that the authorities were sent to the far flung area to access the situation that was damaged by the cloudburst. However reports had earlier said that, two bodies were also recovered from the area, which were washed away due to sudden cloud burst in the upper reaches of Karnah and Tangdar areas.
Earlier during the evening hours of Aug 14, flash floods had also entered the army camp, residential houses and in schools.
A canal of a local power project at Pingla Hari Dawal was also damaged in a separate incident of flash floods, said reports.
