Students in peripheral schools suffer due to paucity of teachers

Early Times Report

Rajouri, Aug 27: Political interference, nexus between teachers/ their leaders and few influential staff members at the helm of affairs at the offices of senior education officers at Jammu and Rajouri, has left many government schools in far off areas without adequate teaching staff.
The main reason behind shortage of staff is that the influential teachers manage their duties at the places of their own choices/ near their habitations while those having no such sources and appointed in hard zones go on long leaves.
In one such incident of shortage of staff, the students of government high school at Kalka, Mathyani in Moghla Education Zone in Rajouri district today locked the school and raised slogans against senior Education Officers including DSE, CEO and ZEO.
In the morning assembly the students lodged their protest, raised slogans against the Education department and later locked the school building because only one teacher was present in the school, alleged parents.
The parents of the students and villagers also joined the students and demanded immediate appointment of required staff.
"For the last many days our children would go to school and return without studies as only one or two teachers come to school to teach 200 students" said Satpal Sharma, ex-naib Panch.
He supported the children's action and said villagers will not allow the authorities to open the locks till the required/sufficient teaching staff was not provided.
Rattan lal a social activist of the area said that out of 12 posts of Masters and teachers at this school 8 were lying vacant. Out of two teachers one was on casual leave while out of two Masters one didn't turn up today.
"The irony of the department is that out of 4 vacant posts of Masters three are serving in Kathua district (under internal adjustments with the Education department officials) and drawing salaries from this school while fourth Master has managed modification of his posting" said Chaman Lal social activist .
When contacted, Lajo Devi, ZEO, Moghla admitted that the children in this school and in many other schools were suffering due to shortage of teaching staff. "I am helpless as the teachers have to be appointed by the higher authorities. Matter is in my knowledge and has also been brought into the notices of higher authorities for early solution" said ZEO.
