Birbals, family members lose address; rebels not interested
Mehbooba struggles to keep PDP intact

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Aug 29: Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has made a last ditch attempt to save her party by sacking her family members who were running the Peoples Democratic Party.
A source said that Mehbooba knows it very well that she has lost the plot and her moves won't help the PDP's cause. "Cinematographer turned politician Tasaduq Mufti, brother of Mehbooba Mufti, who was inducted into the politics through backdoor has already left the state and is reportedly holidaying in some foreign country," he added.
Main players Naeem Akther, Sartaj Madni, Peerzada Mansoor and others have been sidelined to just convey it to the rebels that they are welcome and can join the party fold. "Mehbooba's move to take PDP legislators to New Delhi earlier this month to attend the last rites of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee backfired as only 15 MLAs accompanied her," said a politician.
He said that it was clear indication that PDP has split into two and she has lost the support of more than 10 to 12 MLAs. "Mehbooba tried to show her strength but the attempt did not yield any positive result," the politician added.
One of the PDP rebel leaders said that when Madam was in power she used to be surrounded by the "Birbals." "These so-called well wishers of the party misled the former chief minister. Had she not promoted the family raaj within her party, PDP would have remained intact. We are not sure whether the new dispensation would be formed or not but we have decided to stay away from the PDP led by Mehbooba Mufti," the rebel leader said.
He said that when the former chief minister inducted her brother Tasaduq Mufti into the cabinet the party loyalist opposed the move and suggested that instead of Tasaduq any elected MLA should be given a chance to be a minister. "Our suggestion was dismissed and Madam went ahead with her plans. A non-entity in the politics was given the important Tourism portfolio, which he couldn't handle. Now Mehbooba has reshuffled her party and is asking the rebel leaders to come back but it looks impossible as they have been pushed to the wall," the rebel leader said.
An insider revealed that PDP leadership is aware about the fact that damage has been done and nothing much can be done. "The so-called advisors, who till the recent past used to project themselves as the main players have gone into a shell as they have been told that they destroyed the PDP."
