Sycophants, political workers working overtime to get into new body

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 29: The Governor's administration has formally communicated dissolution of the current body of Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council that completed its tenure on the 11th of this month.
The Council secretariat has been on job for the last one month, shortlisting the names for the constitution of fresh body after the Governor's office directed to compile list of people with genuine credentials in the field of sports; but sycophants, pseudo journalist, political workers and self- styled sports promoters have been lobbying hard to somehow get into the list of 29.
With Sports Council, the apex government body in sports been reduced to an asylum for the political workers and henchmen by the popular governments, the genuine sportsmen and sports professionals have high expectation from the administration as this would perhaps be the first Sports Council to be constituted during Governor's rule.
"Time and again, political parties have used the Council to 'adjust' their blue eyed political workers, elbowing out the genuine sports professionals who can actually contribute to the cause of sports in the state" said a state awardee, pleading anonymity.
"There are so many sports professionals and sportsmen who have represented the country and gained international experience, which can be put to use for development of sports," he added.
Sources in the Sports Council divulged that many of those nominated to the previous Council 'managed' to get in using their political contacts, or by mis-representation of their credentials in sports. Many of those nominated to the Council undeservingly, later used the platform to either further their business interests or to mis-project themselves at other platforms.
"A businessman was nominated at the behest of a senior officer in the state administration and his only contribution was to enhance his business interests using his position in the Council" said an officer of the Council.
ET learnt that many others used this platform to get their kin recruited through the backdoor or to get undue benefits for their blue eyed.
It may be recalled that a leading journalist, who was also a national level athlete and was nominated to the previous Council, tendered his resignation over the misuse of position by certain members. Two other editors of leading publications of the state who were nominated by the government to the Council set an example by tendering their resignation and making it amply clear that only those who had made substantial contributions in the field of sports as players, coaches or professionals should only be included in the Council.
"I hope the Governor will personally scrutinize the list recommended to him so that no blue eyed boys get accommodated for another term" said an elite sportsman of Jammu.
