PDP, BJP fast losing voter base in Kashmir, Jammu divisions respectively
Kargil council elections, a significant rejoinder

SRINAGAR, Sept 4: The results of recently held elections of the Kargil Council have proved that policies and programmes of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) are no more accepted by the people of the state.
PDP and BJP who were coalition partners in Jammu &Kashmir for three and half years have virtually been rejected by the people of Kashmir and Jammu respectively. This is despite the fact that these parties got an overwhelming mandate in 2014 assembly election in the two divisions of the state.
In the 26 member Kargil council of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), National Conference emerged as leading party with 10 seats closely followed by Congress with eight seats. While independents emerged victorious on five seats, PDP got two seats and BJP got one seat.
It has been learnt from sources that BJP pumped huge money in the Kargil council elections and at the end of the day the party could get just one seat. The election results have to some extent un-nerved the party leaders more so at a time when elections for local bodies and Panchayats are just around the corner.
"The BJP leadership was hoping that it would win many seats in Kargil council elections but that did not happen. The setback suffered by the party led to frustration among the party leaders and workers. This forced them to issue statement about the Panchayat elections saying that serious thought should be given before holding elections for Panchayats," said sources.
Sources said that PDP is sailing in the same boat as the party has suffered a serious dent in Kashmir and Ladakh region as well. They said that failure of the party leaders from Kargil on the developmental front gave a chance to NC and Congress to reap benefits in the council elections held in the last week of August.
"Despite being in power for around three and half years the PDP could not take forward the Kargil region on the road of development. Although, an important member of PDP continues to call shots still then no development whatsoever is visible in Kargil town and adjacent areas," said sources.
Sources said that the voter base of PDP and BJP has been eroded to a great extent in Jammu & Kashmir respectively and it would be difficult for both the parties to regain the ground. As such the 2020 assembly elections would be highly testing for both the parties and it remains to be seen how they would fare in the next assembly elections.
It would be in place to mention here that PDP-BJP assumed office on March 1, 2015 and the first spell of the coalition ended on January 7, 2016 with the death of PDP Patron and then chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The phase two of PDP-BJP government lasted for more than two years and ended on June 19, 2018 when BJP pulled out of the coalition government citing different reasons.
