Two persons including excise & taxation officer killed as trekkers fell into crevice in Pahalgam

SRINAGAR, Sep 7: Two persons including an excise and taxation officer were killed while as yet another person was injured after a group of trekkers fell into a crevice at Kolahoi glacier in the South Kashmir's health resort of Pahalgam in Anantnag district.
Reports said that two persons who were part of a trekking group died after they fell into a crevice at Kolahoi glacier in the Pahalgam area in the evening today. The dead were identified as Naveed Jeelani, Excise and Taxation Officer and Adil Shah of Alpine Group. One person identified as Hazik got grievously injured in the incident. "Rescue teams of Police, SDRF and local volunteers launched by District Administration Anantnag are on the job. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan has requisitioned Air Force Helicopter through the Civil Aviation Department and sought assistance of Army for helping the rescue operation," said Aamir Ali, Director Disaster Management, Jammu & Kashmir. Aamir said that Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam is personally reviewing the rescue operations and has authorized air rescue operation. He said that Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has asked Air Force to launch rescue early in the morning on Saturday with winching facility. Ground teams are expected to make contact with the trekkers in a few hours, as it is a very difficult terrain. In the meantime, Jammu & Kashmir Police at Ganderbal rescued a couple of students who were stuck in Thajwas glacier of Sonamarg. A police spokesman said that students of KIE Higher Secondary School, Lasjan Srinagar had gone for Excursion at Sonamarg.
"A group of students during late hours left for trekking to Thajwas glacier, while returning back few students lost their way and also got injured due to slippery condition of glacier. During late evening SOS call was received by Sonamarg Police who swung into action and after conducting extensive searches, traced the missing students and brought them to nearby hospital for treatment," said a police spokesman.
