Now ICDS purchases Sub Standard “Channa”
Food Analyst gives negative report
9/10/2018 11:04:05 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 10: The Mission Directorate of Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) has once again been caught on the wrong foot as he has made purchases for sub standard "Channa"(grams) to be supplied to hundreds of Anganwari centers in Jammu region. Earlier the Directorate had made purchase of sub standard "Rattan" biscuits and after sustained campaign by Early Times the supply order was stopped by the administrative department.
Details available with Early Times reveal that more than 50,000 quintals of Channa has been purchased for Jammu province and many samples are showing negative results under J&K Food Safety Act. A copy of the report given by Food Analyst Jammu has been obtained by Early Times. The report pertaining to ICDS block Phalanwalla says that "Sample does not confirm to the standards prescribed for Channa under Food Safety Act". Sources have revealed that all the samples have same report , but at many places ICDS has managed to get positive report. " How is it possible that sample from same lot and batch of Channa will show two different results. The ICDS officials have managed to change the sample in some blocks like Bishnah etc. But in 90 % of the ICDS Projects the Channa supplied is misbranded, spurious and sub standard. We are forced to accept this sub standard supply, we can't even raise our voice " said an official of ICDS in Jammu. Due to continuous media pressure, Mission Director of Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) in J&K was earlier directed not to supply the sub standard biscuits to ICDS Projects who further supply the same to Anaganwadi Centres across state. Pertinent to mention that ICDS Mission Directorate had selected a biscuit brand which was declared sub-standard and misbranded in 2017 by Assistant Commissioner Food Safety. Early Times is already in possession of the said report. The said biscuits are to be supplied to around 30,000 Anganwari centres across state in the coming weeks and health of around 10 lakh kids is at stake. Sources reveal that administrative department has directed ICDS Mission Director not to supply the biscuits to Project Offices or Anganwadi Centers. ICDS had shortlisted a company by illegal means which had to supply biscuits of inferior quality to the directorate meant for Anganwadi centres across state. Sources say that biscuits identified and accepted are manufactured by an unregistered firm that has several FIRs registered under JK Food Safety Act in Ganderbal & Kathua.
