Arch rivals announce poll boycott
One saw increase, another decrease in vote share in past
9/11/2018 10:19:01 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 11: As two rival political parties have announced poll boycott in the upcoming Urban Local Bodies and Panchayat elections, the vote share of the National Conference had decreased while the Peoples Democratic Party had increased in the previous elections.
However, in the past three years, the PDP too lost credibility among the people due to its failure in giving good governance.
On August 31, the state government, headed by Governor Satya Pal Malik, had announced the long-pending panchayat and urban elections in the state beginning October 1 and culminating on December 4. It was decided that the municipal elections would be held in four phases from October 1 to October 5, while panchayat polls would be conducted in eight phases from November 8 to December 4. Days after National Conference announced to boycott the elections to panchayat and ULB in the state unless the Centre clarifies its position on Article 35A of the Constitution, which is facing legal challenge in the Supreme Court.
Similarly, the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti Monday announced poll boycott.
When one look at the past elections, the vote share of the NC had decreased in against increase in the PDP.
According to official figures available the NC had secured 28 percent vote share in 2002 Assembly polls and polled 22.02 percent vote share in 2004 Lok Sabha polls, which further dipped to 19.11 percent in 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, an abrupt 8 percent decline recorded in NC's vote share compared to the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. It polled only 11. 1 percent vote share in 2014 elections NC had won Baramulla and Srinagar LokSabha seats in 2004 and swept all the three Parliamentary seats of the Valley in 2009 polls. However, in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the NC-which had ruled the Jammu and Kashmir most of the times, was routed in the Valley with party president Dr Farooq Abdullah tasted his first ever defeat of his political career. However, he made a comeback after the then PDP leader Tariq Hamid Karra resigned and the seat fell vacant after Farooq won 2017 by-polls. The flouting of PDP had emerged a vibrant threat for the NC as former's vote share has substantially increase since it made its maiden entry in 2002 Assembly elections. However, in the last over three years of rule, it is believed that PDP has lost its major voter share.
PDP had got 9.28 per cent votes in 2002 elections and then it polled 11 94 in 2004 LokSabha elections, which increased to 20.5 percent in the 2009 Parliamentary elections. The PDP won all the three Parliamentary seats of the Valley in 2014 Parliamentary polls but there was not much difference in its vote share as compared to 2009 polls.
However, the PDP lost Srinagar by-polls last year against the NC.
