Congress may lose polls in case it loses support from NC
9/11/2018 10:30:20 PM
After the Congress has suggested to the Governor to hold the ensuing Panchayat elections on non-party basis is a sound advice. This suggestion has emanated after the National Conference President announced that his party will neither participate in the Panchayat, or Assembly or the Lok Sabha elections. However, this has not softened the ties between the Congress and the National Conference. A senior National Conference leader, who is also MLA, Mohammad Akbar Lone, has cautioned his party leadership against any prepoll alliance with the Congress. Lone has said that if National Conference (NC) jumps into the poll fray it should not enter into a pre-poll alliance with its former ally Congress, senior National Conference (NC) leader and lawmaker from Sonawari, Muhammad Akbar Lone Saturday said Jan Sangh was better than Congress.
Lone was addressing party leaders and workers on the 36th death anniversary of former Prime Minister of Jammu Kashmir, Sheikh Abdullah, Lone said Jan Sangh was better than Congress, as, unlike Congress, they did not clandestinely pursue an "anti-Kashmir agenda". "NC shouldn't ally with Congress in or out of power," Lone has cautioned. "If we ally with Congress, we will be at a loss." He said the Congress has been changing stands vis-a-vis Kashmir. "They say one thing here and quite another thing in India," Lone said referring to the Congress' "dubious stand" on the issue of Article 35-A defence. "Every party other than Congress is on the same page," he said. The National Conference leadership has blamed the Congress for changing its stand on Article 370 and Article 35-A.
How far the Congress will face the National Conference criticism? Is it not clear because in the light of the changing security and political situation the Congress may be a loser without a support from the National Conference. And in the light of the PDP strengthening its vote bank after it came out of its alliance with the BJP and hence the Congress cannot win without the support of the NC. Since the NC has announced to boycott the Assembly and the Lok Sabha elections it may not help the Congress because by the time the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls are held in Jammu and Kashmir the Apex Court may have decided on the issue of Article 35-A. And suppose the Supreme Court favours retention of the Article 35-A will the NC contest the polls? Yes there is no other alternative and if the NC jumps into the poll fray it may pose a serious challenge to Congress and the PDP.
