Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 20: In what could be termed as government apathy, the IPD facilities in ISM department are operational in capital cities only.
Reliable sources in department concerned informed Early Times that Ex- ISM director claims that during his tenure he had streamlined the department, constructed Ayurvedic/Unani colleges and other essential buildings. Also started the first batch of BAMS in state but astoundingly the director had forgotten t to start the IPD facilities in other districts of state, they said.
However, a couple of years back, government had established 20 AYUSH units in various Allopathic health institutions of state to ensure that people have a choice of treatment available to them. At that time the director these units will be made functional in all the health facilities of the state in a phased manner. To begin with OPD facilities are being started with immediate effect followed by a minimum of ten beds for IPD where patients can get treated through traditional systems of medicine. Sources further said that the college was started on internal arrangement basis by Ex- director ISM without creation of even a single post. The faculty has been deployed by drawing the medical officers of ISM from various medical officers of ISM from various field institutions rendering most of them defunct.
"Now total beds strength of ISM department across state is 475 in which 200 beds which was establish by government for IPD facilities in various district across state but the director has failed to start such facilities in these units. At present the department provides OPD facilities in these units, running on internal arrangement" sources alleged and added that no proposal forwarded at the end of department for creation of new posts for these units.
Sources alleged that the Ex- director heads the department for the last13 years but has failed to provide ambulance facilities to maximum districts of state. People belongs from remote districts have faith on AYUSH treatment because medicine prescribed by ISM doctors have no side effect but in absence of IPD facilities in districts, they spend huge amount to visits Ayurvedic/Unani hospitals in capitals cities of state for better treatment.
