Private school earns more than two crores in two days; 'loot', 'plunder' in name of education

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Sept 21: With the admission process at its feverish pitch most of the private schools in Kashmir valley are making merry by minting money like anything and the worst part is that there is no accountability whatsoever.
Sources told Early Times that a leading school minted more than two crores after it completed the admission process of the nursery and lower kindergarten classes. The admission process was completed in two days and the parents of the kids paid Rs. 90,000 each as admission fee.
"Education has virtually been commercialized in the world and how could Kashmir lag behind in this regard. In fact the private schools operating in the valley have broken all the records since they are demanding huge money as donation from the parents of children who wish to get their wards admitted in a particular school," said sources. Sources said that a school that forms a part of chain of schools operating in the North India admitted around 250 children in the nursery and lower kindergarten classes with the admission process getting completed in two days. They said that around two and half crores were earned by this school in two days. "It is a shame that the school management received Rs. 90,000 as admission fee from kids who are yet to come to terms with the contemporary world. The admission fee is not admission fee but donation or capitation fee. Ironically the people in general and more so the parents have surrendered before the private schools when it comes to fee structure," said sources.
Sources said that the higher ups in the Department of School Education have been found wanting when it comes to taking action against the schools charging exorbitant fee from students. Over the years the department higher ups have failed to act against such schools thus emboldening the management of the schools to resort to 'loot' and 'plunder'.
"Few days back the department acted against a school citing that the school is charging exorbitant fee from students. Truth of the matter was different and it was not even remotely connected with the fee structure of the school. The department should wake up and discharge its obligations in an able and honest manner," said sources.
Sources said that the department should fix the fee structure of the private schools and at the same time it should also make the picture clear about the donation to be demanded from the parents of the students. They said that Fee Fixation Committee has failed to fulfill its mandate in this regard.
"The Fee Fixation Committee has over the years remained just an entity with nothing concrete happening on the ground. The Committee has during its tenure not recommended any action against any school so far suggesting that the exercise of forming the committee is a futile one," said sources.
