BANDIPORA, Sept 21: With the killing of three more militants in Sumlar forests the death toll of has mounted to five, however the encounter between militants and security forces has been officially called off, but operation against the militants is still on in the area.
A top police official while talking to early times said that, "earlier two militants were killed yesterday in the dense woods of Sumlar Bandipora and today three more militants were neutralized, taking death toll of militants to five.
All the bodies of the slain militants have been recovered along with weapons and other materials from them, yes the encounter has been called off, but the operation against the militants is still on, the top police official said.
When asked about the affiliation of militants, the official informed ET that the identity and the group affiliation of the slain militants are being ascertained, and possibly by their structures and physique, it seems that they belong to Lashkar-e Toiba.
Srinagar based defence spokesperson, Col Rajesh Kalia confirmed to early times that, three more militants have been killed in Sumlar Bandipora, taking death toll to five, the operation is on.
However sources said that, yesterday the gunfight broke out at Shukbabun area of Sumlar village.
Today morning the fresh gunfight broke out in the same area, after which the joint team of army, SOG and CRPF launched combing operation against the hiding militants, said sources.
They said that, the security forces have blasted the house, and it was known that five militants have been killed in the gunfight; the area is being sanitized by the army and police. Reports said that, District administration Bandipora has ordered for closure of all government and private educational institutions including Degree Colleges and schools in the territorial jurisdiction of on Sep 22.
It is pertinent to mention here that the gunfight broke out after Army's 14 RR, SOG of JK Police wing and the CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Shukbabun area of Sumlar village on Thursday afternoon.
