PDP leader 'pledges to defeat' Congress in Srinagar
10/10/2018 10:05:08 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 10: Even the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party had claimed to boycott the ongoing urban local body polls, the twin regional parties have allegedly joined hands to defeat Congress in the summer capital of Srinagar on the intervention of a senior PDP leader.
Sources said the senior leader of the PDP, who has been lobbying for alliance with the NC in the state, was in touch with the leaders of the opponent party with "sole aim" to defeat Congress candidates contesting the municipal polls.
Sources said the senior PDP leader, who enjoys good relations with his party colleague holding influence in the Batamaloo Assembly constituency, had pledged that they have to defeat the Congress candidates especially the one who was contesting for Laway Pora ward.
Sources said wife of a senior Congress leader who is contesting from the said ward was their main target. The Congress leader was previously associated with the PDP but left the party in 2016 during the unrest.
It was reliably learnt that the senior PDP leader from Amira Kadal constituency who wants to "settle personal" scores with the Congress leader had also got in touch workers of the two regional parties to "make the woman face defeat come what may."
"The PDP and NC cadres were told to do anything to defeat her and that money was no criteria to achieve this goal," said a source in the PDP on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said for the last few days the PDP leader was in touch with various political parties to meet his designs and that he had "invested heavily in Batamaloo constituency through his man Friday."
"Actually the man who is supporting PDP leader's objectives in the polls was previously a Man Friday of the Congress leader but with change of guard he changed his loyalties," said an insider.
Sources said the PDP leader in question has told his "friends" in NC that they need to defeat Congress at any cost and that a "group of officials was by their side."
Sources said some of the NC leaders agreed to work on the plan. A senior leader close to the twin regional parties said: "Basically it's an open secret that both NC and PDP have proxy candidates in the elections so none of the two want any other party win."
Despite repeated attempts the PDP leader couldn't be contacted for comments.
