Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Oct 16: The four phase municipal polls in the state culminated today as the final round of the voting was held in 25 wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation and wards falling under the jurisdiction of Municipal Committee Ganderbal.
Although, the polling had to be conducted in 26 wards but the same was not carried at Chaterhama ward since the election there has already been won uncontested. Re-polling was also held in Bachi Darwaza ward after complaints that some names were missing in the voters list during the polling on October 13 in the third phase.
In the SMC wards less than four percent polling was recorded. Out of the total electorate of 2, 41,043 in the wards of SMC just 9685 came out to vote. It meant that 3.9 percent polling was recorded in the SMC wards for today.
The Bud Dal ward located in the interiors of world famous Dal Lake saw an overwhelming participation with 2313 votes being polled there. In the Alamgari Bazar 1882 votes were polled while as 1286 votes were cast at the Pantha Chowk ward.
In the Lal Bazar ward 563 votes were polled while as in the Nishat ward 559 votes were cast. In the Hawal ward 386 votes were polled while as in the Braine ward 331 votes were cast. In the Harwan ward 307 votes were polled while as in the Gilli Kadal ward 290 votes were cast.
In the Hazratbal ward 276 votes were polled while as in Bachi Darwaza ward 262 votes were cast. In the Dalgate ward 250 votes were polled while as in the Habak ward 205 votes were cast. In the Zakura ward 179 votes were polled while as in the Kathi Darwaza ward 162 votes were cast.
In the Kawdara ward 115 votes were polled while as in the remaining wards the votes polled were in double digits and not three or four digits. Soura ward created a record of sorts as no vote was polled there. 29, 87, 23, 25, 59, 40, 30 and 69 votes were polled respectively in Nowshera, Botshah Mohalla, Umar Colony, Jogi Lankar, Lokut Dal, Tarabal, Buchpora, and Ahmad Nagar wards.
A high voltage drama was witnessed at a polling station in Bachi Darwaza after some voters objected to the presence of press photographers there. These voters demanded that the people associated with the fourth estate should leave the venue. One of the voters in fact pelted stones on the press photographers and it was only after the intervention of security forces personnel that the situation was normal.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Shaleen Kabra this evening said that overall 4.2 percent polling was witnessed in the fourth and final phase of Municipal Polls-2018 in Srinagar and Ganderbal today. He said Ganderbal witnessed 11.3 percent polling in 12 wards where 38 candidates are in the fray. He said Srinagar witnessed four percent polling where 24 wards went to polls today. The CEO said re-poll was also held today at Bachi Darwaza of Makhdoom Sahab (Ward No: 41) where five candidates are in the fray. He said the cumulative poll percentage in all the four phases is 35.1 percent. The counting of votes will be held on October 20, for which, Kabra said, all arrangements have been put in place.
The municipal elections-2018 where held in four phases, covering 79 municipal bodies with an electorate of about 17 lakh electors. A total of 3,372 nominations were filed for 1145 wards.
