Champions of region's cause down play history's Bulwark
Jammu's ardent lover continues to remain unsung
10/19/2018 10:48:02 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 19: Maharaja Hari Singh, an ardent lover of Jammu seems to have been ruthlessly forgotten by the people who claim to represent the sentiments of the region on all for a. The idea pertaining to the declaration of holiday on his birthday has been abandoned.
NC founder and former Jammu and Kashmir's chief minister who did many acts of treason against the Dogra rule in Kashmir even admits in his autobiography that the love Maharaja Hari Singh had for Jammu was deep rooted inside his heart and even at the time of departing from this world, his last wish centred around Jammu.
On Page 289 of his book Aatesh-e-Chinar, Sheikh Abdullah describes the love Maharaja Hari Singh had for the Jammu region of the state. "He (Maharaja Hari Singh) wrote in his will that after his death his ashes were to be scattered over the Jammu region only," Sheikh mentions in his book.
As per the historical records, after the Maharaja died in Bombay, he made his last wish loud and clear that his ashes were to be immersed in River Tawi after being scattered over the plains of Jammu. However, even after 57 years of his death, those at the helm have forgotten this great hero of the state's history and the resolution even after being passed by the state legislature to declare holiday on his birthday remains shelved at the General Administration Department. The greater irony is that the helmsmen who claim to be champions for Jammu's cause haven't raked their minds to remember the person who was a bulwark against the swirling tides in the state. Rest of the political spectrum in the state looks at the issue with a jaundiced eye.
In 1938, it was none other than Maharaja Hari Singh who established the Jammu and Kashmir Bank Limited with its head office at state's summer capital. The Maharaja issued orders that besides conducting its banking business; it will take over the government treasury both at Jammu as well as at Srinagar. The bank also established its branches in important towns of the state. Much a measure taken by Maharaja Hari Singh gave a great flip to trade and industry and increased state's industrial production.
At present, J&K Bank has a unique role in State's economy. The products and services it offers are highly customized to suit specific requirements of different segments of people engaged in varied economic activities. Earlier, Maharaja also established small silk factories at Jammu and Srinagar. These factories provided employment to a large number of workers and were also a source of income for the rural families which reared cocoons.
In 1929, an exhibition in the state was organised which displayed good produced by small scale industries.
Meanwhile, it continues to remain a mystery that how come such a great personality and a statesman has been forgotten by his own state and by his own people. Why a ruler who saved his state from turning into am apocalypse has been undermined and blind eye being turned towards the services he rendered for the state.
