Temperatures improve in J&K
11/9/2018 10:03:46 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 9: The night temperature witnessed some improvement though it settled slightly below normal at majority of the places in Kashmir valley, where the day chill intensified further even as wet weather was predicted from Saturday onwards under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance (WD).
The border town of Kargil was the coldest place in the region at minus 7.4 degree celsius, followed by Leh, where the mercury settled at minus 5.1 degree.
A Met department spokesperson told that the weather will mainly remain dry during the next 24 hours in Kashmir valley. However, he said that a fresh WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching the region though Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the state on Saturday.
"Under the influence of the WD, rain and snow is predicted at some places in the valley on Saturday," he said, adding the moderate to heavy snowfall is expected from Monday onwards.
Even though there was an improvement of a degree from Thursday, the night temperature at Leh settled at minus 5.1 degree. The mercury in Kargil also witnessed marginal improvement as it settled at 7.4 degree, against 8.6 degree recorded on Thursday.
After witnessing an improvement of over a degree from Thursday, people woke up to a sunny Friday morning though the chill continued due to ice cold winds in the summer capital, Srinagar. However, as the day progressed, weather turned cloudy resulting in further dip in the day temperature in Srinagar, where the maximum temperature was 2 degrees below normal. Against minus 0.4 degree recorded on Thursday, the mercury improved and settled at 1 degree, which is still slightly below normal.
Despite an improvement of about 2 degree from Thursday in the night temperature, world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, was still the coldest place in the valley. Against 5.4 degree recorded on Thursday, the night temperature in Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, was minus 3.5 degree, which is about 4 degree below normal.
