Security agencies on tenterhooks for Panchayat polls, red alert sounded
11/15/2018 10:36:13 PM
Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 15: Ahead of the commencement of the Panchayat polls in the restive state of Jammu and Kashmir from Saturday, the security agencies are on tenterhooks.
Sources said the security agencies have sounded a red alert across the Jammu and Kashmir regions in the wake of separatist call for a "total hartal" on the day the first phase of polling is scheduled to be held.
Sources said Raj Bhawan's Advisor on Home affairs, K Vijay Kumar is personally keeping track of the security preparedness for the polls and has conveyed that "no error judgement will be tolerated."
Sources said the intelligence agencies have inputs that Pakistan would "make all out efforts" to disrupt the polls through its terror actives in the region.
Even though dozens of additional companies of the paramilitary CRPF have been brought in supplement the security grid to avoid any untoward incident, the smooth conduct of the electoral process will be "litmus test" for the performance of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in particular.
Sources said Union Home ministry has already conveyed to the state police that their performance in the conduct of the Panchayat polls will decide the future of most of the cops enjoying key posts this time.
Sources said during a recent meeting with the police officials, the Raj Bhawan has made it clear that conduct of Pachayat polls will be the "actual test" of policing in the state.
The government has told the police officials at the helm that the conduct of urban local body polls passed off peacefully as the electoral process was held in the towns and cities alone where militancy is not that active.
"Unlike urban local body elections the Panchayat polls are to be held in the areas which have been the hotbed of militancy in the state… While till now mainly south Kashmir was seen as a tough situation, the recent killing of two BJP leaders in the Doda region has put entire state on a alert," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
He said recent arrest of two militants from Jammu province has only added to the concerns that if more such terror groups could be active in the winter capital region, possibly trying to disrupt peaceful conduct of the polls.
When contacted a senior police official said: "The security grid is well in place. We have kept our fingers crossed."
