Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 15: Despite introduction of Travel, Tourism and Hotel Management as an optional subject at Higher Secondary level in 2008-09, Students opting for it complain that the subject is not being taught properly.
If sources are to be believed, even the curriculum/syllabus for the subject had been prepared by Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) since long, yet it is not being taught in Govt. Schools leaving the Students in a quandary.
Sources further claimed that interestingly, Travel and Tourism is a major industry of J&K, it is also considered as the backbone of the state's economy and main source of employment for youth. So there is a huge demand for Professionals in the industry.
Travel and Tourism as a Subject is being taught in different universities Including Jammu, Kashmir, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, degree colleges, Govt./Pvt. Polytechnics, ITI's and even in Govt. Schools as a Vocational subject at secondary level (9th & 10th) and a large number of students who pass their Secondary School Examination with vocational subject as Tourism find it difficult when the same subject is not being taught at higher secondary level.
It is pertinent to mention here that as per the notification issued by J&K BOSE vide No.F (Acad-c) Voc-cor/XI/18 dated 17.03.2018, students who have passed their Secondary School Examination with vocational subject can opt for the same subject in higher secondary part 1st (class 11th) as one of the elective subject as per new scheme of studies/combination of subjects.
A large number of students want to opt for tourism but due to non availability of subject at 10+2 level and teaching faculty creates confusion among the students to choose the subject, said sources.
Scores of the students appealed that Govt. should immediately Introduce Travel, Tourism and Hotel Management as a compulsory subject at Higher Secondary level across the state from the current academic session i.e.2019-20 and immediate creation of posts of lecturers/teachers in the corresponding subject.
Sources further maintained that there are many post graduates/graduates with tourism management background and having vast Industrial experience are already working in the Education Department. So, their services may be utilized which would be of a great help to the education department to start with the subject in high demand.
