Mirwaiz refuses to appear before NIA, will anti-terror agency act?
3/15/2019 11:31:09 PM
Early Times Report
srinagar, Mar 15: Challenging the premier anti-terror organisation, separatist Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has again decided not to appear before the National Investigating Agency.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday issued fresh summons to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to appear for questioning at the probe agency headquarters in connection with a terror financing case at its headquarters in New Delhi on March 18.
The NIA had on February 26 carried out searches at premises of separatist leaders, including the Mirwaiz, in connection with the case related to terror funding in Jammu and Kashmir.
He had been asked to appear before the NIA on March 11 but the Mirwaiz had expressed his inability to join the investigation in Delhi fearing for his security in view of "conditions of hostility". But he again seems not to be cooperating with the anti-terror organisation in the investigations.
Taking NIA's summons lightly, Mirwaiz on Friday targeted it for the summons. He said that National Investigating Agency was launching crackdowns, making arrests, and issuing summons to suppress Kashmiris, slapping of PSA, and sending prisoners to outside jails.
"These things are not new to us and have seen since 1931. Kashmiris voices can't be suppressed through military power. We are not going to bow down and Delhi can't force us into submission by intimidating us," he said. "We won't succumb to these threats," he said, referring to NIA summons. He also shouted anti-national slogans and blamed Government of India for "pushing youth towards militancy and becoming suicide bombers".
He was addressing a gathering at Srinagar's Jamia Masjid. The cleric of the Jamia Masjid, who is associate of Mirwaiz said that they have decided that Mirwaiz won't appear before the NIA. "We are not afraid of NIA. He won't go to Delhi," he claimed.
On his call some people held a protest and later resorted to stone pelting outside Jamia.
This is for the first time when any separatist leader has openly challenged the NIA.
"He is taking summons lightly and not cooperating with NIA. As per the law, the NIA can take tough action against him," a police official said. "We have to wait till March 18. Mirwaiz is trying to pressurize the security agencies by asking his supporters to resort to violence if he is arrested," the official added. "If he has nothing to hide then why he is not cooperating with security agencies?" the officer questioned.
