NC-Congress: Pre-poll alliance of its own kind
Elections 2019

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 20: NC president Farooq Abdullah and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday sprung a big surprise. Nay, they made the people to laugh at the NC and the Congress leadership. The case in point is the so-called pre-poll alliance that both the parties stitched. It would be a misnomer to call it an alliance at all. It was a pre-poll alliance of its own kind.
Why what Farooq Abdullah and Ghulam Nabi Azad could not be really termed as a pre-poll alliance? There are cogent reasons for that. The most important reason is that there will be "friendly" contests between the NC and the Congress in the Kashmir's two Lok Sabha constituencies - Anantnag and Baramulla. There will be a "friendly contest" between the two parties on the Anantnag and Baramulla seats, they said. They also said that the "alliance in J&K for the Lok Sabha polls is in national interest and it will help strengthen secular forces".
Another important reason was the announcement made by Farooq Abdullah that "both the parties were thinking in terms of friendly elections in the Ladakh lone Lok Sabha seat".
There are only 6 Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, 2 in Jammu, 3 in Kashmir and 1 in Ladakh. In other words, there will be friendly contests between the so-called pre-poll allies, the NC and the Congress, in the three constituencies of Baramulla, Anantnag and Ladakh. Srinagar will be only constituency in Kashmir where the Congress will not field its candidate. As for the Jammu's two Lok Sabha constituencies - Kathua-Udhampur-Doda and Jammu-Poonch - the NC will not field its candidates. To be more precise, the Congress left the lone Srinagar seat for the Congress and the NC left both the Lok Sabha seats for the Congress.
In 2014, the NC and the Congress had also forged pre-poll alliance. The NC had contested election in Kashmir and lost all the three seats to the PDP. The Congress contested election in Jammu and Ladakh and it had lost all the three seats to the BJP. The NC had got 11 per cent votes and the Congress 10 per cent.
