For bonhomie with NC, Congress 'sacrifices' Tariq Karra again
3/21/2019 10:31:09 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 21: In bonhomie between National Conference and Congress for the Parliament elections, senior leader of the national party, Tariq Karra seems to have been "sacrificed again."
In 2016, Karra who was also the then Member Parliament from Srinagar had resigned from Peoples Democratic Party and the MP seat and subsequently joined Congress.
But in the 2017 by-elections for the said seat, instead of making Karra contest, Congress supported NC candidate Dr Farooq Abdullah.
This was despite the fact that Karra was seen as a promising face for Congress from Srinagar.
Sources said that time he was assured "good future" but even this time, this dreams seem to have been shattered by his party only to appease the Abdullahs.
Interestingly, Srinagar is the only seat in Kashmir where from Congress has decided not to field its candidate but again want to support Dr Abdullah alone.
Though both NC and Congress will field separate candidates from north and south Kashmir, central Kashmir is the only seat where from Karra was the probable face who could win but has been sidelined.
"Now he(Karra) has no options but to ask his vote bank to support Dr Farooq Abdullah and this will be something awkward for him to do," said a political analyst on the condition of ;anonymity.
Karra who was seen as a PDP veteran had left the party following his differences with leaders including Dr Haseeb Drabu, Altaf Bukhari and Naeem Akhter whom he would accuse of "having ruined the party due to greed and inexperience."
Interestingly, Drabu and Bukhari were subsequently shown the door from the PDP. Though some months ago rumor mills were rife that Karra would reconcile with the PDP, no such development took place.
On the day when senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ambika Soni visited Dr Abdullah's residence in Jammu Karra was missing from the scene.
