Killing of RSS leader: Police still clueless
Kishtwar: Curfew lifted, internet restored
4/15/2019 10:11:52 PM
Asif Iqbal Naik
Jammu, Apr 15: Curfew was lifted from Kishtwar town after six consecutive days on Monday, even as the police remains clueless in the assassination of top RSS leader Chanderkant Sharma and his security guard by the militants.
Following the lifting of curfew, visible improvement in the overall law and order situation has been witnessed in Kishtwar town where people held peaceful protest against the district administration and police demanding transfer of Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar and some police officials.
As per the details available with "Early Times", the curfew, which was promulgated in the town and adjoining areas last Tuesday following the killing of Sharma and his security guard inside a health centre, was on Monday first relaxed for three hours from mid-day which was later extended further till evening.
As soon as the curfew was lifted, heavy rush of people was witnessed outside shops and ATMs in the main markets during the relaxation period, which passed off peacefully.
Senior officials said that they are monitoring the situation and are planning to lift the curfew fully and added that the situation in the district is well under control and army is still engaged in maintaining law and order.
The RSS leader's killing triggered violent protests, with angry mourners ransacking the office of the senior superintendent of police on April 10, prompting authorities to impose strict curfew in the communally-sensitive town and its adjoining areas.
Earlier, authorities had relaxed the curfew in a phased manner for one hour on April 12 and again for a few hours in different phases on Sunday. During last six days as well as on Monday, peaceful protests were witnessed in different localities with people demanding administrative haul in the district where anarchy has taken roots while security of the common people had been compromised.
Also, corruption has taken deep roots as a result of which police authorities fail to initiate action against the anti-national elements who had taken center stage in trouble hit Kishtwar district that witnessed massive increase in terror-related activities, and the OGW network of Hizb has strengthened under the nose of senior officials. Despite inputs about the threat to life of late Chanderkant Sharma his security was compromised.
Meanwhile, the army remains deployed in the district and is assisting Central Reserve Police Force and police to maintain law and order.
The mobile internet services were suspended in the entire Chenab Valley belt viz Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban districts Tuesday, but were restored in Doda and Ramban districts last Friday night.
Police had picked up several suspects believed to be OGWs for questioning in connection with the killing of Chanderkant Sharma and his PSO while a massive hunt is on to nab the culprits.
But Kishtwar police is continuously hounded in dark as killers are still at large and there seems no light for the police at the end of the tunnel even though it was claimed that four terrorists involved in the killings have been identified. , But no details have been shared with the media or with the family members of the deceased.
Police has claimed to have seized the Alto car used in the attack and released a picture of its alleged owner, Zahid Hussain Sagar, who is said to be absconding since the day of the attack.
There was also conflicting reports about the role of Zahid Hussain Sagar which need to be further probed and to be cleared by the Kishtwar police.
The election campaigning has been hit badly due to curfew for the past one week following. Several political parties are aghast at the role of DC Kishtwar and have forced the election authorities to intervene as Congress party believes that DC Kishtwar Angrez Singh Rana who is considered close to BJP leader Dr. Jatindra Singh is deliberately prolonging the curfew in the Kishtwar so that polling percentage in the district will remain low.
