Ladakh Cong in disarray, Karbalie to fight as an Ind candidate
4/19/2019 11:11:41 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 19: The Congress is in deep trouble in Ladakh. Its senior leader from Kargil and former MLA and ex-Chief Executive Councillor of the Kargil Autonomous Hill Council Development, Haji Asgar Ali Karbalaie, on Thursday revolted against the party high command. He filed his nomination papers from the lone Ladakh Lok Sabha seat and declared that he will contest the poll as an independent candidate. He will fight against the Congress's official candidate Rigzin Spalbar.
Karbalaie was one of the two Congress leaders whose candidature had been considered but the Congress high command cleared the name of Spalbar, who hails from Leh district and is one of the prominent faces in the district. He had headed the Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council also.
The decision of Karbalaie to contest the Lok Sabha poll as an independent candidate from Ladakh constituency only indicates that all is not well with the Congress. Clearly, Karbalaie's decision will damage the electoral chances of Rigzin Spalbar and help the BJP candidate Tsering Namgayal to a great extent.
Karbalie will be one of the 8 candidates who would test political waters. Other prominent candidates in the fray are Sajjad Hussain Kargili (independent), Tsering Namgayal (BJP), Kacho Mohammad Feroz (independent). Most of them are from Kargil. Sajjad Hussain Kargili has been nominated by School Kargil (ISK). The NC and the PDP have also promised support to him. Karbalaie is being supported by powerful Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust (IKMT).
Scrutiny of nominations will be held on April 20. Candidates can withdraw their nomination papers till April 22. Polling will be held on May 6.
In the meantime, the people of Kargil have urged all the political parties to field only one consensus candidate from Kargil to avoid split of votes. They even held a protest demonstration and blocked the road for hours to make their point and put pressure on all the political parries, barring the BJP, so that they fielded only one candidate so that they could vote in one direction.
