AB-PMJAY's flaws come to fore
Patients forced to wait till opening of Amrit pharmacies

Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 22: Ambitious Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPMJAY)'s flaws have come to the fore, as a number of patients who fall under this scheme are being denied surgeries due to unavailability of Amrit pharmacies in Jammu and Kashmir.
Here need to mention that the much ambitious scheme- AB-PMJAY was launched some months back, but later state hospitals' administration stopped to purchase instruments and other items, which are used during surgeries, from the open market because of the patients' low package under the ABPMJAY. Since then, the patients are running from one door to another to get treatment.
On Monday, an above-said scheme patient was denied surgery due to his low package, and hospital administration could not afford to buy implants and other items from open markets on higher rates. That is why they are waiting for opening of Amrit pharmacies in the state.
"I belong to a poor family and have a ABPMJAY card, but they said that surgery cannot be done as the cost of surgery is higher than my package and they are not purchasing any surgical items from the markets due to unknown reasons, " the patient told Early Times, adding that he was feeling very disappointed that the scheme is not fruitful for him.
Earlier, another patient was also denied surgery as hospital administration is not purchasing the items required from open market. It means the patients have to move either to private hospital or wait for opening of the Amrit pharmacies in the state.
"I remembered that day when I was denied surgery and felt very bad. I was shocked when a doctor, who is working in the hospital, had asked me to visit a private hospital for the surgery and the card will bear all expenses of the surgery. I asked officials of the government hospital that if the private hospital is purchasing items by using this card then why are you not doing the same. They kept mum, " patient said.
A senior official of GMC Jammu, seeking anonymity, said that except for surgical items, medicine and others are being purchased but the same are not available because the rates of the implants and other surgical items are higher than from the patients' packages.
He said that letters were sent to the concerned authority to give permission to buy the items from open market at rates of Amrit pharmacies, but no permission was given.
