PDP leaders 'reaping benefits' from pain
5/15/2019 11:34:26 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 15: After striving to reap political benefits from Jammat-e- Islami ban and highway ban, PDP seems to have been subtly getting involved in making the Bandipora rape case yet another political issue.
One after the other, PDP leaders have begun issuing statements even week after the gruesome incident was reported. The first one was issued by party vice President Abdul Rahman Veeri who demanded exemplary punishment to the culprits. Another one was issued by its former MLA from Batamaloo Noor Mohammad Sheikh who asked people to maintain calm and peace.
Then came Mehbooba Mufti's uncle Sartaj Madni who demanded that a law be in the state so that no relaxation in terms of the punishment is given to a rapist even if he is a minor.
Today, on May 15, another statement came from the PDP and this time it was issued by Dr Mehboob Beg. He said that the perpetrators of such a crime should not go unpunished and the State machinery should leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is not only done, but not delayed. We cannot afford to have such criminals roaming around freely. Dr. Beg also added that this virus must be destroyed root and stem. "These criminals and their actions leave deep scars on the victim, besides shaming and disgracing the whole society but we must also be aware and seek the right course of action, guided by appropriate reaction," he said
While we must stay vigil and keep an eye on the administration and point-out if they appear lax, we must refrain from protesting and coming-out on the roads. Issues like these should never go un-noticed and the society must rise. However, let us not get busy in chasing the shadows while we lose the substance.
Let us stay vigil, let us behave as a mature society, we must keep the law enforcement/administration on its toes but must also be careful that we do not react immaturely and end-up shifting the focus away from the real issue, concluded Dr. Beg.
Meanwhile, what is catching several eyebrows is the fact that the PDP sensing that public sentiment is with the issue is trying to score brownie points from it.
"Even when similar incident was reported from central Kashmir's Ganderbal, why didn't the PDP react on that. Why did the party remain silent on that issue. The fact is that there are people on the streets because of the Bandipora case and that is why PDP is making hectic efforts not to leave a single stone unturned to hoodwink people," says a netizen while reacting to the news reports about PDP's repeated press statements.
There were also questions raised over the party's stand at the time of the highway ban as the PDP created hue and cry, garbed headlines and disappeared from the scenes.
There are apprehensions that instead of contributing towards making the state a better place to live for the people of all age groups, the political parties ahead of the state polls are all in unison trying to reap benefits from such a pain.
