Early Times Report
Jammu, May 21: While the government has plans to abolish toll tax in Kashmir, the toll at Ban Toll Plaza has been increased three times in the past two years.
The toll plaza was started in 2015 and the toll for light motor vehicles was fixed at Rs 85 for single entry and Rs 130 for double entry . In 2017, the rates were increased and fixed at Rs 115 for single journey and Rs 170 for double. In 2018, it was again hiked to Rs 120 for single and Rs 180 for double entry, and now last month, it was raised to Rs 135 and Rs 200 for single and double entry, respectively.
For the last two years, the toll has been hiked three times which is highly unjustified and puts excess burden on general public of the Jammu Province. But the state administration seems in no mood to take remedial measures to relieve the Jammu people of the burden.
The Governor on 10th of May 2019 while inaugurating a grade separator at TRC Srinagar said that "They (NHAI) are working on exempting toll tax for locals with the central government. But due to the ongoing election process in the country things have slowed up a bit." Earlier commuters refused to pay new tax levied by NHAI on Srinagar-Anantnag highways.
People from all walks of life told Early times about the injustice meted out to people of Jammu.
Sumeet Mangotra INTUC state Secretary / former District Youth congress president Udhampur while talking to Early times said that the Govt intends to abolish toll tax in Kashmir but in Jammu it has been increased three times in two years.
Welcoming the proposal of abolishing toll tax in Kashmir, Magotra sought similar relief for Jammu division as well.
A government employee said people of Jammu are being looted in the name of toll tax.
Rohit Khajuria Civil society Udhampur claimed that they are being forced to pay Rs 200 for travelling a distance of 60 kilometers which is unjustified especially when the government has plans to abolish toll in Kashmir.
The Jammu people have sought appropriate measures.
