Jammu-Akhnoor-Poonch railway: A mere BJP line rhetoric
5 months on, project confined to papers

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 22: Despite getting nod from former Railway Minister to construct ambitious railway line project from Jammu to Poonch via Akhnoor Rajouri the project is yet to take off.
Pertinently, in December last year, the former Railway Minister announced approval for Jammu-Akhnoor-Poonch railway line and announced that the government is going to keep budgetary provision of Rs 2370 Crores in the upcoming railway budget and also announced that the upcoming project would be kept in the list of national projects but after lapse of five months from the announcement, nothing has happened in this regard so far.
Sources informed Early Times that the project has been lingering on since the first UPA regime, thereafter they conducted several surveys over the project but ironically successive government never take the issues seriously, and keep the announcements only on papers.
Initially, the survey report of Reconnaissance Engineering-cum-Traffic survey for new BG line between Jammu to Poonch via Akhnoor and Rajouri was submitted to Railway Board in 1999. Thereafter four successive updations were conducted and updated survey reports were submitted to Railway Board in November 2000, September 2008, September, 2010 and September 2017 respectively.
The latest updated survey contains following details like Project length 223.075 kms and Project cast Rs 22271.55 Crores but against the project the cost the Union Minister announced that initially Rs 2370 Crores would be kept under upcoming railway budget of February 2019 but the announcement proves merely as rhetoric.
"Basically, in the Month of November 2018, the Union Railway Minister gave approval of Baramulla-Kupwara railway line. Just after the announcement of Kashmir based railway line, a anger started brewing among Jammuities and they started criticising BJP for partial approach towards Jammu", said sources and adding that keeping in view the upcoming general election of 2019, and anger against the BJP government, the then government minister concerned announced same project (Jammu- Poonch railway line) for Jammu region but after lapse of five month the project is nowhere in sight.
