J&K police files charge sheet in 17 days against accused in Sumbal rape case

BANDIPORA, May 25:Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday filed a charge sheet in Sumbal minor's alleged rape case before special court of principal district and sessions Bandipora.
An official said that the police filed the charge sheet in a record time of 17 days from the commission of the alleged crime.
The accused has been booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) section 3 and 5 and 376 a, b and 342 RPC. Widespread protests broke out across Kashmir following the alleged rape of the three-year-old earlier this month. The protesters clashed with the security forces in which one youth was killed in Pattan area of north Kashmir.
The amount was released under J&K Victim Compensation Scheme, 2013, an official spokesperson said.
The rape of a three-year-old girl in this north Kashmir district had sparked outrage across the country.
As the news of the minor's rape broke out, people poured onto the streets and demanded justice for the girl.
Notably, The Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik had directed police to complete investigations on a fast track basis.
A senior police official told ET that, so for action was taken against the accused as per law," and we were ordered a time-bound enquiry by the governor"
He said that a special investigation team comprising SDPO Sumbal, SHO Sumbal and Senior Prosecuting Officer was constituted to investigate the case. Sources said that, soon after the directions were passed by Governor, one person was arrested. The state police constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the rape case.
However sources said that earlier the J&K State Legal Services Authority (JKSLSA), had sought extension for submitting its report which the Court accepted and directed it to file by May 25.
Pertinently on May 8, a three-year old girl was allegedly raped in Sumbal area of Bandipora by her neighbour, triggering widespread anger in the form of public protests and clashes in the Valley.
