Is something cooking behind the curtain?
Omar, Mehbooba in silent mode
7/20/2019 12:41:28 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, July 19: Is something cooking behind the curtain? Why did the separatists in Kashmir not give call for a shutdown on the eve of and during the Home Minister Amit Shah's maiden visit to Kashmir last month? Both these questions are being asked by the keen Kashmir-watchers?
The visit of Amit Shah to Kashmir, and the fact that for the first time in 30 years, Kashmir Valley remained calm, has triggered a debate in important quarters that something might be cooking behind the curtain. Some have even concluded that "some sort of a dialogue could soon commence between the Centre and the separatist amalgam operating under the label of the Hurriyat Conference".
Yet another development that has triggered a debate in the political circle is the fact that neither NC vice-president Omar Abdullah nor PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has made any significant political statement for many days now. Both Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are known for making controversial statements, as also for using social media to put across their points of view. That they have maintained silence for so many days cannot be ignored.
The point is that some important sections are expecting yet another "political initiative on Kashmir". What the question is: What will the talks be about? Will New Delhi go in for some negotiated settlement on Kashmir? Will New Delhi dilute its age-old stand on Jammu & Kashmir? What can it give to Kashmir to end the communal strife in the Valley? What could be the possible political solution to the so-called political problem? Will New Delhi once again reach an agreement with the NC or the PDP over the heads of Jammu and Ladakh like it did in 1952, 1975 and 1986? Or, will the Modi Government ignore the mandate it got from Jammu and Ladakh, nay from across India, and go by what the Kashmiri leaders have been demanding?
These and many more similar questions are being raised by the concerned sections both in Jammu and Ladakh, and even in New Delhi. However, almost all agree that "something big will happen in the state after the conclusion of the ongoing annual Amarnath Yatra". What that something big will be? One has to wait for some days to know that. In the meantime, all must keep their fingers crossed.
