Early Times Report
Jammu, July 21: Blocked drains, dilapidated lanes have become common view of Gorakh Nagar near Bag-e-Bahu where residents have to face numerous civic problems particularly insanitation across the area.
Continuing his mass contact programme, Munish Gupta, Editor Early Times, who would be contesting forthcoming assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency met with residents of Gorakh Nagar and heard their plights and assured them to raise their issues on appropriate platform.
The residents raised the issue of defunct street lights and absence of them in many places due to which lanes plunge into dark. "There is one streetlight in our lane, which is lying defunct due to which there is total dark in the night hours making difficult for us to walk on these streets. I also complained to local representative to fix this problem and installing more street lights but he didn't do anything towards this issue," said Suraj Bahadur, Laxmi Gurung.
Sheetal Sharma raised the issue of sanitation in her area. "The drains are not cleaned regularly. The only street light near our house is not working. I asked the local leader but he didn't do anything," she said adding that if any one complained about the civic issues of the area with the leaders, they targeted them, which is the example of dirty politics. The residents who raised voice are harassed by tagging them as sympathisers of a particular party and the issues remain unattended.
"The drains remain clogged, tiles in many lanes are broken. Dilapidated drains are damaging our houses as water seep into base due to which there is danger of base of house being caved. The garbage thrown by residents gets accumulated at my door and dirty water overflows but the nobody comes regularly to clean them," said Reeta, Raj Kumar, Dev Raj, Rajesh Arora, Rani Devi.
Beside this area, Munish Gupta also met with some residents of Nanak Nagar Sec -3 and heard their problem. "Macadamisation on road was done just year ago in Khalsa Chowk but it has started breaking down at some place we asked the contractor to repair it but he didn't bother. Although there is rule that contractor will look after the road for five years and damage will be repaired by him," said Joginder Singh Inqulabi.
He further said that we got blacking topped work done by difficulty. The local MLA Kavinder Gupta was giving false assurances to do this work. "We all the local residents pressurised him to do this job. We have never seen such inefficient leader in our life who even don't care about the problems of his constituency," he alleged. Meanwhile another resident, Gurdeep Singh of Sec-3 Nanak Nagar raised the issue blocked and unclean drain and alleged that the concerned department doesn't work seriously and consistently.
Laxmi Devi and her family has been living in miserable condition as a huge drain passes through her house which is uncovered and emanates foul smell making unbearable for them to breathe in polluted air. "The drain comes from Bagh-e-Bahu which carries with it a large amount of dirty water of hundreds of household and falls into drain just in front of my house which gives stinking smell. We requested the local leader to cover the drain but despite empty assurances nothing happened," she said.
There are many residents who have not been enrolled in voter list. "I applied for enrolment of my name in voters' list nearly 3 years ago but till date my name has not been included. Our forms were filled by the concerned officials and we submitted requisite documents but no action has been taken," said Sarika. Similarly Komal said that she had also applied for enrolment of my name in voters card but nothing has been done.
