Contractor disowns ailing worker, leaves his family high and dry after his death
Retained worker's Bank account copy, ATM, didn't pay salary of six months

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 21: Puran Chand (35) of Bishnah had been working as Generator Operator at Technical Airport Satwari for the last over 12 years getting Rs 12500 as monthly salary in cash from ML Gupta of PR Constructions.
Even in that meagre salary, he was happily running his family, supplemented by some income from agriculture, but all hell broke out over the family in the last six months.
Puran Chand had kidney dysfunctional problem and after fighting the ailment for over six months at expensive DMC Ludhiana hospital, he left for heavenly abode, leaving his wife Suman Lata in huge debt and responsibility to run the family.
Whereas the contractors have disowned their own worker and not even paid the salary of December month, for which Puran Chand had discharged his duties.
"I have been demanding the salary of my husband from the officials of PR Constructions, Mohan Lal Gupta and Rs. 20,000 from Pawandeep but they have refused to acknowledge that my husband's salary was pending. They are not even picking up our phone calls", Suman Lata lamented.
Narrating the tragedy that has befallen her, Suman Lata said, in the last first week of January 2019, Puran Chand developed some pain in his lower abdomen and was brought to Super Speciality Hospital, where she was completely shocked to discover that her husband had kidneys' dysfunctional.
The old mother donated her kidney to save son's life and after spending over Rs. 10 Lakhs at DMC Ludhiana, my husband had a successful operation of kidney transplantation on 25th of March 2019. My husband recovered fast and we took a room on rent near the hospital, due to high rent of hospital rooms.
Suman Lata further says that they had been staying at Ludhiana due to regular check-up calls. My husband complained of chest pain in the last week of May but doctors at DMC termed it as normal and discharged him after some treatment. But on the fateful day of June 1, he again complained of chest pain and when we brought him to DMC again, doctors declared him brought dead, failing the strenuous efforts of a gullible wife, children and poor mother, whose kidney failed to save his son's life.
Though all hell broke over the family but the Contractors under whom Puran Chand had been working for last over 12 years, were found totally inhuman and insensitive. "Though the comrades of Puran Chand had apprised them about his serious health condition but the contractors never called the family or paid the salary of the December month, for which he had worked", Suman Lata lamented, adding that after hectic efforts, they got some documents and found that Puran Chand had Bank Account in Canara Bank Gandhi Nagar, bearing customer ID-115673952, Nominee name is Suman Lata and Nominee Reference number is 2594004458.
A cursory glance at the Bank statement revealed that he had been getting the monthly salary of Rs. 14,000 on every 4th of month but Suman Lata revealed that Puran Chand was getting cash amount of Rs. 12500 and that too on 16th of every month. "The Bank Account's Copy as well as ATM has been kept by the contractor and they have been depositing salary through NEFT (Mohan Lal Gupta), as well withdrawing the complete money. After deducting Rs. 1500 every month from the worker's salary, they paid less salary to Puran Chand as well as other workers", Suman Lata said, adding that it was very shocking that these blood-sucking contractors, didn't bother about the health of their worker and even loot the poor workers from their meagre salary.
His brother, who was accompanying her said that Prime Minister Narender Modi had made it compulsory for contractors to give salary through online mode so that poor workers would not be looted but these contractors have adopted a unique way by keeping ATM and Bank copies of workers. "Though these workers must be covered under Employees Provident Fund as well as ESI cover but these contractors have been dodging the authorities with active connivance of the officials, and defeating the efforts of Prime Minister Narender Modiji", he said.
The poor family has appealed the Governor as well as Divisional Commissioner Jammu to take cognizance of the matter and ensure justice to them, so that their sufferings would be mitigated little bit.
