Even after facing IT raids, SMC's Deputy Mayor continues to call shots
7/22/2019 12:26:22 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 21: Authorities not cracking whip against SMC's deputy mayor- a declared tax evader- has raised several eye brows with many questioning the claim to accord transparent and corrupt free governance in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Income Tax department of Jammu and Kashmir government on June 11 raided at least three private offices of Deputy Mayor Srinagar Municipal Corporation Sheikh Muhammad Imran in Srinagar.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes or CBDT said the action yielded results leading to recovery of "incriminating evidence" like documents of sale of undisclosed property amounting to Rs 22 crore.
It said papers were also recovered relating to agreement to sell transport business for Rs 9.10 crore, undisclosed profit of Rs 15-20 crore on account of sale of cold storage plant at Lassipora in Pulwama district.
"The cost of this project (in Lassipora) was found to have been inflated to Rs 47 crore instead of the actual cost of Rs 17 crore for claiming more subsidy from the government by raising inflated and bogus bills. The loan for this project was taken from J&K Bank," the spokesperson said.
Undisclosed properties at Sonamarg (valued Rs 2.68 crore), Pahalgam (Rs 3.55 crore) and Bengaluru (Rs 1 crore) have also been found along with a shop in partnership in Delhi which was purchased for Rs 1.02 crore, it said.
Now, when more than month has passed since then, there are questions being raised that why so far there has been no action taken against the deputy mayor and why he continues to remained glued to his position at the SMC?
"On one side tall claims are being made that crusade against the corrupt people in the state has been launched and on the other hand a declared tax evader is being shielded by the administration without any remorse. It is high time that the government acts against the tax evader," says an RTI activist based in Jammu.
Pertinently, the Deputy Mayor of SMC was at the receiving end of the peoples' wrath last year after he ridiculed an on doctor duty in one of the government hospital. People even then questioned his role and authority in poking his nose into the matters that are beyond the reach of his reason and mandate.
The doctors at the Chest Diseases Hospital in Srinagar then protested against the "misbehavior" with their colleagues.
Carrying placards, the doctors protested against the misbehavior of the politician in question. They said that his interference in the hospital matters was uncalled for. They said that he used abusive language with the doctors.
He was later forced to apologise before the doctors for transgressing the limits and speaking beyond his authority.
