Most-secured site for Pandit colony in Srinagar taken over by influential!
Displaced community seeks PM Modi's intervention, probe

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 21: Even as New Delhi looks ahead for return of displaced Pandit community to their homeland in Kashmir, a prime chunk of land measuring around 300 kanals, Dhar Bagh, owned by a Kashmiri Pandit family next to the high security Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar, has been "taken over a influential lobby of Kashmiris" who announced that a township would be constructed there.
The proposed township offers a first of its kind colony in Kashmir with over 20 feet wide roads, CCTV surveillance, green spaces and much more to the potential clients. Sources said the bookings have already started for the project worth crores of rupees.
Experts said given the massive urbanization of Srinagar, this was the only chunk of secured land left in Srinagar that could be safely used for construction of the Pandit colony as it lies next to "the most secure Army cantonment."
But the sources said one influential lobby, about whom Early Times will report in the coming days, went for the deal with the Pandit family.
Sources said what is most shocking is the role of administration in allowing the land deal. "When Modi Ji is working on a plan for return of Kashmiri Pandits, such a land should have been spared for the cause. How come did the state government behave so irresponsibly," said an expert on security focusing on return of Kashmiri Pandits.
He said given the location of the land it was fit for rehabilitation of the displaced Pandits and could even be used to construct a colony for officials working with the Ministry of Home Affairs at their Gupkar office.
"This land could be used for lot many crucial things… One can only wonder how and why such a deal was allowed in the first place," the experts said.
The Pandit community has expressed concern over the development with many of them demanding a high level probe into the matter.
The concerned citizens have appealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to get a high level probe ordered into the matter so that this land is "saved for good purpose."
Despite repeated appeals the concerned couldn't be contacted for comments.
