Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 23: Continuing with his mass contact programme, Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, who would be contesting upcoming assembly election from Gandhi Nagar constituency as an independent candidate, today reached Shastri Nagar area.
During his visit, Munish Gupta met people from all walks of life and had meaningful interactions with them. The residents of the locality while highlighting their woes and grievances told Munish Gupta that their problems remained unattended since long adding that they further got aggravated after the PDP-BJP coalition government came to power in the state.
A majority of the residents of the area expressed their annoyance against the poor hygienic condition while they also raised the issue of improper sewerage system in their locality.
Pinning high hopes on Munish Gupta's endeavour, a resident, Sunder Dass Bhagat while speaking to him said, "You (Munish Gupta) are following the right track. Listening to and getting a firsthand knowledge of the people is a good step which needs to be welcomed by one and all."
While narrating the problems of the locality, Bhagat said that the unhygienic conditions prevailing in the area is the biggest nuisance.
"The vacant portion in front of my house is being used as a dumping ground. Filth and trash lay scattered in the surroundings," said Bhagat.
Another inhabitant of the area, Anu Sharma told Munish that drains are completely blocked as there is no proper flow and outlet for the waste water.
"The drains have turned into gutters due to which foul smell emanates in the vicinity. The clogged drains are also a source breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects while the drains wreak havoc in rainy season," Anu Sharma said.
Parveen Mahajan while raising the issue of dilapidated condition of roads and lanes said that the roads are in shambles, however, no one from the administration bothers to get them repaired.
"The main road connecting Nai Basti and Shamshan Ghat as well as the by lanes have large size pot holes which are an open invitation for a mishap," said Parveen Mahajan.
Sulekha Sharma also complained about the clogged drains while she also lamented bad condition of lanes and bye-lanes of the area.
While Raj Kumar Sharma and Rajinder Gupta, come up with a very peculiar problem of non-provision of drainage adjacent to their houses.
"There is no provision of drainage for ours as well as two-three other houses due to which the waste water from all these households flows on to the road. The water gets logged in front of entrances which not only bothers us but also spoils the road," said Raj Kumar and Rajinder.
Rakesh Kumar, another resident of the locality, raised the issue of non-functional street lights and blockage of drains adding that the filthy drains breed mosquitoes and fleas due to which the inhabitants are under constant threat of an epidemic.
Renu Gupta and Rajinder were appalled over the pathetic condition of roads and streets in their locality.
"The roads and streets are in worst condition. The roads are not blacktopped for the last two years. The pot holed roads are getting troubles to commuters but the authorities are not paying attention towards repairing them. We do not allow our children to go for cycling on the road as the bumpy rides could turn into a nightmare. It is safe to remain indoors rather than falling on road due to pot holes," said Renu and Rajinder.
Darshan Lal raised the issue removal of iron covers of drains adding that the drains in his locality used to be properly covered but the authorities removed several covers without any reason or rhyme.
Listening patiently and keenly to the residents, Munish Gupta assured them that he would try to solve all their problems after getting elected as MLA.
