Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 23: The cash crunch Government owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited commonly known as BSNL is facing a daunting task to cater the growing demand of landline telephone connections as well as the broadband services from the general public as well as from various government offices due to continuous suspension of mobile calling and internet services in the Chenab belt following the abrogation of article 370 and 35 A of the constitution on August 5, 2019.
As per the details available with "Early Times", following continuous suspension of mobile and internet services in the entire Jammu and Kashmir, the demand for BSNL and broadband connections in Chenab belt of the Jammu region has increased many folds but the cash stripped BSNL fail to cash in the huge public demand due to lack of resources and staff.
Heavy rush of the people is being witnessed at all the BSNL offices including at Kishtwar District since last two weeks, but due to lack of staff in terms of linemen and telephone cables is hunting the progress in installation of new connections as well as restoration of old landline connections.
Following the termination of mobile and internet services, the people were seen clearing the pending bills for activation of the landline and broadband numbers as a result of which BSNL manages to recover revenue worth several lakhs pending with the customers.
The people including the businessmen told the "Early Times" that they are suffering badly due to non availability of the communication as well as the internet services added that they fail to carry forward the financial transaction in absence of internet services.
They said that they are visiting the BSNL offices since last several days but fail to restore or install their landline connections added that businessmen community is ready to pay anything for availing the landline and broadband services so that they could bring back their business back on track.
"In Kishtwar BSNL office there is only one linemen after majority of the staff is retired in BSNL while the company too fail to recruit new staff" the people inform.
The people said that majority of the landline cable wires had been stolen by the buglers as a result of which it is becoming difficult to trace the pairs for restoration of landlines.
A government employee told the "Early Times" that like business community, the government official work also suffered. They said they fail to trace their employees working in the field and said that like everyone they are also visiting the BSNL office regularly, but every time there is one or other excuse from the concern BSNL officials.
RDD employee informs the "Early Times", that majority of the departmental works suffered due to lack of internet services.
"Geo tagging, uploading of invoices, preparing of online estimates, booking of material components-in fact all the works related to the department are linked through internet" he said added that government should make alternative arrangements in case the suspension of internet and mobile connectivity prolonged.
A retired BSNL told the "Early Times" that the BSNL officials must shift some staff from Udhampur and Jammu to cater the growing demand of the new costumers and term the situation as blessing in disguise for the company which company fail to pouch upon.
