Elections boycott day over, Kashmiri politicians in quandary
8/23/2019 11:13:50 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 23: Kashmir politicians, who thrived on elections boycott politics during the past seven decade, may not find it easy to make a comeback.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said that it seems that Government of India (GoI) before reorganizing Jammu and Kashmir would have take boycott factor into consideration. "During the past three decades, the contestants who barely got 10 to 15 percent votes, projected themselves as big leaders after winning the elections", he said.
He said that Kashmiri politicians thrived in conflict and kept the pot boiling to keep their political interests alive. "The Centre downgrading Jammu and Kashmir state to Union Territory seems to be a part of the long term plan to revive politician process in the region so that true representative of people become leaders", he added.
A Kashmir watcher said during the past 30 years, many people, who never contested elections, have become leaders in Kashmir, and claimed that they are representatives of people. "Unfortunately these so-called leaders during all these years never tried to bring Kashmiri into mainstream. Their narratives revolved around separatism and sedition. There statements and utterances provided a handle to Pakistan and their stooges in Valley", he added.
Irony is that even farmers Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, went out of the way to appease the separatists and people sitting in Pakistan. "Many leaders in Kashmir have developed a habit of abusing their own country to get recognition in the neighboring country", said an Observer.
He said that after 5 August situation in J&K changed drastically. "The J&K turned a Union Territory with legislature, it means that elected representatives would have limited powers and the party which come into power, will be completely dependent on Lt Governor, who will have final say", he added.
"The all powerful MLAs of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State will have no say at all in the administration and other affairs. It looks like that the decisions to clip the wings of Kashmiri politicians would have been taken calculating their vote share in the elections", the Observer added.
After things start falling in place in J&K, the traditional politicians may find it even difficult to locate their address, and the boycott factor is likely to vanish. "The Pak stooges, who use to call for elections boycott and preach sedition, don't fit in the new schemes of things and they wouldn't be able to carrying forward their anti national agenda in the valley", the Observer said.
