Councillors level allegations of corruption against Khilafwarzi officials of JMC

Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 6: The meeting of General House of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Friday turned ugly as councillors levelled serious allegations of corruption against Khilafwarzi officials and also entered into a verbal duel, forcing the Mayor to leave the meeting halfway.
Councillors alleged that the JMC has become a hub of corruption and their appeals have not been addressed by any official.
The General House of JMC, which comprises of all the councillors, was called by Mayor in which two Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) councillors raised a banner of revolt against, what they alleged, functioning of Corporation, which has allegedly become a hub of corruption.
"Buildings have been constructed rampantly in every ward but it is unknown whether building permissions have been granted or not. There is no monitoring over the funds collected by Khilafwarzi officers in lieu of granting building permissions", a councillor said, adding that there must be a white paper on the collection of funds by Khilafwarzi officers.
Inviting attention of Mayor towards a news story published yesterday, the councillors said that as per the story, the Mayor has claimed that he has allocated Rs. 1 Crore to each councillor but reality was that the councillors have got nothing. "Apart from 40-45 street lights, we have got nothing from JMC authorities but after reading the news, people would ask the councillors about the money, then what we will reply to them", the councillors said.
Responding to the news item attributing to him, Mayor claimed that the news item was false and he would talk to the newspaper about the content, which was published without his knowledge. Unsatisfied with the replies of the Mayor the councillors threw a volley of questions and later they entered into a verbal duel, after which Mayor JMC Chander Mohan Gupta left the venue, leaving meeting halfway.
Criticizing the JMC authorities, a woman councillor, flanked by over a dozen other councillors, claimed that JMC claimed that several dustbins of blue and green colour have been installed in various wards but on ground, no dustbin was visible anywhere.
She also levelled serious allegations of corruption against Khilafwarzi officials as well as failure of JMC authorities to maintain sanitation in wards. "In our ward the garbage is lifted from one lane and then dumped to another but despite repeated requests to the JMC staff, nothing was done.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan and now Fit India campaign but without maintaining sanitation, how the fitness will be ensured", the councillor said.
