Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 18: Girish Karnad's Naagmandal by Eklavya Theatre group, Dehradun as the seventh production in the ongoing Rangleela Natya Utsav turned out to be another strongest presentation today. The assembly of artists drawn from Dehradun seemed very well versed the theme of the play and gave scintillating performance.
The play based on a mythical lore about a love between a snake and a woman holds the central idea of the story. The woman who is ignored by his husband for a whore is given a herb by an old woman to be mixed in the vegetable for the husband. The woman instead pours that blood ridden vegetable in the snake hole which is eaten by snake and thus starts visiting woman in the guise of her husband. When the woman gets pregnant by the snake, her original husband shocked and angry takes her to village panchayat where the snake also comes to justify the purity of the woman . But when the husband still does not agrees to the panchayat verdict and snake's confession, it is snake in the end whom takes all blame upon himself and goes into a self imposed punishment . Jagriti Kothari, Akhilesh Narayan , Akaash Gupta, Paramjit, Harsh Mishra Pankaj Kumar, Mayank and others gelled together to present a very entertaining performance. The set of the play was exquisitely designed to match to the needs of the story while costumes were stunning - that of snake and other performers like Rani , Annapa, , Nagappa , Naag Saanp and others .
Akhlesh Narayan , the young director to whom credit is along credit of plays gave direction to Naagmandal which was excitedly reprocated by the people. The event is being held by Laksya-The Aim and co-powered by Nutan Prayaas Manch. Sanam Sudan, the coordinator of Rangleela Natya Utsav who presented mementoes to the participants said that the performers and groups from outside state have been very cooperative in making the festival successful.
