8 leaders expelled for raising banner of revolt
BDC elections: Cracks wide and open in BJP
10/18/2019 10:36:04 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 18: The forthcoming Block Development Council (BDC) elections in Jammu & Kashmir have exposed the cracks within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On Thursday, the saffron party expelled 8 of its leaders for indulging in anti-party activities. According to the media reports, the BJP leaders at many places are contesting the BDC elections against the official candidates of the party and the BJP state leadership is very much aware about it.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Cracks within the BJP are an indication that all is not well within the party. The 8 leaders who've been expelled have raised a banner of revolt by jumping into the poll fray as independent candidates or are supporting the rebels."
He said, "Field for the BJP is open both in Kashmir as well as the Jammu region as the political parties including Congress are not in the fray. But the rebels within the party could upset the BJP's applecart." An observer said, "The BDC elections are an opportunity for the BJP to make inroads into the Kashmir Valley, where it has failed to make much impact, despite the party making all the possible efforts to make its presence felt."
Media reports suggest that Kashmir-centric parties and Congress staying away from the BDC elections has provided a chance to the BJP in the Valley to motivate the Panchs and Sarpanchs, who form the Electoral College for the BDC polls to join their camp and vote for its candidates.
The observer said, "However in Jammu region situation is entirely different as the independent candidates who have rebelled against the party can give a tough competition to the official candidates. The BJP state leadership seems to be unaware of the fact that BDC elections are entirely a different ball game. These elections are being held to strengthen the grass root democratic institutions and they should have taken everyone along."Another analyst said that the rebellion within the BJP in Jammu & Kashmir can turn the tables on the saffron party in the upcoming Assembly elections which would be held in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir soon after the delimitation process is completed.
"The factionalism within the BJP has once again proved that the party leadership has not been able to handle the young leaders and new faces in a proper way. When BJP shared power with the PDP in Jammu & Kashmir many first time MLAs had become restless due to them being sidelined by the big leaders," he added.
